ウサギさんの診療で気をつけていること What to watch out for in rabbit medical care

ウサギさんは可愛くて、大きな声では鳴かないし、臭いも肉食獣みたいに強くない、飼いやすい動物さんですよね。

Rabbits are cute, they don’t make loud noises, and their smell is not as strong as that of predators. They’re an easy animal to keep.

でも、ワンちゃんやネコちゃんと比べると、診療することを敬遠される獣医師さんが多いように感じます。私はウサギさんのエキスパートではありませんが、ウサギさんの診療で気をつけるべきポイントをこれまでの経験や知識に基づいて自分なりに把握し、診療させていただいています。

However, compared to dogs and cats, many veterinarians seem to shy away from treating rabbits. I am not an expert on rabbits, but I have my own understanding of the points to pay attention to when treating rabbits based on my experience and knowledge.

今日はそのいくつかのポイントについて書いてみたいと思います。

Today I would like to write about some of these points.

非常にデリケートに扱う必要がある Must be handled very delicately.

これはどういうことかと言いますと、特に恐がりのウサギさんの場合に、急な接触をすると驚かせてしまい事故が起きかねないということです。

What this means is that sudden contact can startle and cause accidents, especially in the case of fearful rabbits.

ウサギさんの骨格は軽くて折れやすいため、落下によって容易に骨折したり、特に後肢の筋力が強いため、自らの脚力で背骨が脱臼を起こしたりします。

The rabbit’s skeleton is light and fragile, and can be easily fractured by a fall, or its spine can be dislocated by its own leg force, especially because of the muscular strength of its hind limbs.

抱き方がまずくてウサギさんが暴れて落としてしまったことで骨折したり、レントゲン検査のために保定をするときに脚力で背骨が脱臼したなどということはウサギさんに慣れた獣医師さんの診療でもよく耳にすることです。

Even veterinarians who are familiar with rabbits often hear of cases in their practice where a rabbit has broken a bone because it was held improperly and dropped out of control, or where the spine was dislocated by leg force when being held for an x-ray examination.

飼い主さんの側からすれば、爪を切ってもらいに行っただけなのに、あるいは食欲が落ちて診てもらいに行っただけなのに、結果として下半身不随になってしまったということになればやりきれない気持ちになりますよね。

For the owner’s part, it would be a pity if he/she only went to have his/her rabbit’s nails clipped or to see his/her rabbits to a doctor because of a loss of appetite, only to find out that his/her rabbits has become paralyzed as a result.

使用できない薬剤がある Some drugs cannot be used to rabbits.

特定の薬剤、特に感染を治療するための抗生物質の中には、ウサギさんの腸内細菌バランスをひどく崩してしまい、投薬によって致命的になることがあります。そういったことから、ウサギさんに薬剤を処方する際には、処方しても問題のないものか常に確認して処方しています。

Certain drugs, especially antibiotics to treat infections, can severely upset the balance of bacteria in a rabbit’s gut and can be fatal with medication. For this reason, when prescribing drugs for rabbits, I always make sure that they are safe to prescribe.

膿が治りにくい Pus is difficult to heal.

ウサギさんの膿瘍は、他の動物さんと違ってチーズ状で排泄されにくく、薬剤も届きづらいのでなかなか治癒しません。特に多いのは歯が伸びすぎたために顎に膿瘍が形成されるパターンです。膿瘍を切除し、原因となる歯を抜いても完治せず、何度も治療が必要な場合が多いです。これは不適切な食生活に起因します。

Unlike other animals, abscesses in rabbits are cheese-like, difficult to excrete, and hard to reach with drugs, so they do not heal easily. The most common pattern is the formation of abscesses in the jaws due to overgrowth of teeth. Even if the abscess is removed and the tooth that caused it is extracted, it does not heal completely and often requires multiple treatments. This is caused by improper diet.

挿管がしづらい Difficult to intubate

全身麻酔をかけるときに気管に管を入れるのですが、ウサギさんの口は入り口が小さく、奥が深いために大きく口を開けて気管の入り口を目視するということができません。そのため気管挿管が困難でしたが、今はv-gelという盲目的に設置可能な気道確保器具があるためかなり難易度が下がりました。

When general anesthesia is given, a tube is inserted into the trachea, but because the rabbit’s mouth has a small entrance and is deep, it is not possible to open the mouth wide and visually see the entrance to the trachea. This makes it difficult to intubate the trachea, but now that there is a v-gel, a device that can be placed blindly to secure the airway, the difficulty has been reduced considerably.

その他 Miscellaneous

今でこそウサギさんに対して、他の動物さんたちと同じように必要な場合には採血をして全身状態の把握に努めていますが、駆け出しの頃には、当時の指導医に”相手がウサギだからといって、何で必要な時に採血して状態把握をすることをサボるんだ？”ときつく言われたことがありました。

Nowadays, I take blood samples from rabbits as I do from other animals to assess their general condition, but when I was just starting out, my supervisor at the time asked me sternly, “Why do you skip taking blood samples and assessing their condition when necessary just because they are rabbits? “

当時の私は”ウサギさんってどこから採血したらよいのだろう？”ぐらいの状態だったので、”よく分からないからとりあえずレントゲン撮って口とか消化管の状態を見て判断しようかな”といった姑息なことをしていました。せっかくウサギさんが得意な指導医が居たのに、指示を仰ぐことができませんでした。

At the time, I was in such a state that I wondered, “Where should I draw blood from in rabbits?” So, that I was just like, “I don’t know, so I’ll just take X-rays and see the condition of the mouth and gastrointestinal tract to make a decision. I had a supervisor who was good with rabbits, but I couldn’t ask him for instructions.

ウサギさんの診療の個別的なことについては別の日に記録したいと思います。今日の内容はかなり薄い感じだと思いますが、追加があればまた後日更新する予定です。
